Anita e Bonnie Pointer escreveram Fairytale para o seu grupo, as Pointer Sisters, em 1974. A gravação das Pointer Sisters (Bluethumb 254) alcançou a 13ª posição na tabela Hot 100 da Billboard. Foram premiadas com um Grammy na categoria Melhor Desempenho Vocal por um Duo ou Grupo.

Elvis gravou Fairytale em 10 de março de 1975, nos estúdios da RCA em Hollywood. Devido à letra triste, Elvis ocasionalmente apresentava a canção ao vivo dizendo que era “A história da minha vida.”
