Heartbreak Hotel

Enquanto um dia lia o Miami Herald no outono de 1955, o compositor Tommy Durden descobriu o cabeçalho “Conhece Este Homem?” Uma fotografia de um
suicídio da vítima acompanhava o artigo. O homem não tinha deixado
identificação, mas apenas tinha escrito um bilhete, que dizia, “Caminho por
uma rua solitária.” A polícia de Miami tinha publicado o artigo com
esperanças de que os familiares do homem ou amigos o pudessem identificar.
Durden achou que o bilhete do homem suicida podia disponibilizar uma base
para uma excelente canção de blues. Telefonou entusiasmado para a sua
colaboradora, Mae Axton, e ela concordou. Os dois escreveram Heartbreak
Hotel em cerca de 15, 20 minutos na casa de Axton. Mae Axton levou a sua
demonstração para Nashville, para a convenção anual de disc jockeys no
Andrew Jackson Hotel em 10 de novembro de 1955. Depois de ouvir a
demonstração no seu quarto de hotel, Elvis ficou abismado. Prometeu a Axton
que gravaria Heartbreak Hotel da próxima vez que estivesse num estúdio de
gravação.
Elvis gravou Heartbreak Hotel em 10 de janeiro de 1956, nos estúdios da RCA
em Nashville. Foi a segunda canção que gravou para a RCA; a primeira foi I Got a Woman. O apoio instrumental foi disponibilizado por Scotty Moore
(guitarra), Chet Atkins (guitarra), Floyd Cramer (piano), Bill Black
(contrabaixo) e D.J. Fontana (bateria).
Gordon Stoker, Ben Speer e Brock Speer deram o apoio vocal. O
primeiro novo single de Elvis para a RCA, Heartbreak Hotel/I Was the One,
foi lançado em 27 de
janeiro
de 1956.
Em
Abril Heartbreak Hotel tinha conseguido ultrapassar The Poor People of Paris
de Les Baxter como primeira canção da nação. Depois de sete semanas de
permanência no topo, foi substituída por The Wayward Wind, the Gogi Grant.
Heartbreak Hotel também foi número um na tabela Country Best-Seller (durante
17 semanas), na tabela Country Juke Box (durante 13 semanas), na tabela
Country Disc-Jockey (durante 12 semanas) e chegou à 5ª posição na tabela de
rhythm and blues – o primeiro disco de Presley a entrar nesta tabela.
Heartbreak Hotel foi o primeiro disco de Elvis a vender um milhão de
exemplares na história e o segundo a entrar para todas as três tabelas da
Billboard. (o primeiro foi Blue Suede Shoes, de Carl Perkins). O total
de permanência na tabela Top 100 foi de 27 semanas. Elvis cantou Heartbreak
Hotel no Stage Show (11 de fevereiro, 17 de março e 24 de março), no
Milton Berle Show (3 de abril) e no The Ed Sullivan Show (6 de
janeiro de 1956). A Billboard listou-o como sendo o single número um
de 1956. Heartbreak Hotel foi cantada no especial televisivo de 1968,
Elvis, e no documentário de 1970, Elvis – That’s the Way It Is.
Em
1956 os The Cadets gravaram uma versão de Heartbreak Hotel para a Modern
Records (Modern 985). Foi a primeira versão de um disco de Elvis por
artistas de raça negra. Outras gravações de Heartbreak Hotel ao longo dos
anos incluem as de Star Fredberg (Capitol 3480), uma paródia de 1956; de
Roger Miller (Smash 2066) em 1966; de Frijid Pink (Parrot 352) em 1970; e de
Willie Nelson e Leon Russell (Columbia 3-11023), que tiveram um êxito Nº 1
country com o dueto desta canção em 1979.

especial dourada que dizia "50º" aniversário.
