In The Ghetto foi escrita por Mac Davis e oferecida pela
primeira vez a Bill Medley (dos Righteous Brothers) e depois a Sammy Davis
Jr., nenhum deles se decidiu a gravá-la. Elvis gravou In The Ghetto em 21 de
Janeiro de 1969, nos American Sound Studios. O seu lançamento em single teve
uma permanência de 13 semanas na tabela Hot 100 da Billboard,
chegando ao 3º lugar. Na tabela country, In The Ghetto alcançou um
decepcionante 60º lugar. Foi um sucesso Nº 2 na Inglaterra. A RIAA
certificou a canção como Disco de Ouro em 25 de Junho de 1969. O título
completo da canção é In The Ghetto (The Vicious Circle), mas a RCA concedeu
permissão para a lançar sem o subtítulo.
Dolly Parton fez uma versão da gravação de Elvis de In The Ghetto
posteriormente em 1969 (RCA 47-0192). A sua versão alcançou o 50º lugar na
tabela country. Em 1972 Candi Staton gravou uma versão (Fame 91000) que
alcançou o 48º lugar na tabela Hot 100.

de seis singles na caixa Elvis’ Greatest Hits – Golden Singles, Volume 1
