Jerry Leiber e Mike Stoller escreveram Jailhouse Rock para o grande número de produção do filme de Elvis de 1957 com o mesmo título. Dudley Brooks tocou piano na gravação, que foi feita em 30 de abril de 1957, no Radio Recorders. No entanto, Mike Stoller, afirma que tocou piano na canção. Na realidade, ele apareceu no filme enquanto pianista de Vince Everett (Elvis). Jailhouse Rock entrou no Top 100 da Billboard para a 15ª posição. Três semanas depois era número um, substituindo a canção Wake Up Little Susie, dos Everly Brothers. Depois de sete semanas na primeira posição, Jailhouse Rock foi substituída pela canção You Send Me, de Sam Cooke. A gravação de Elvis passou um total de 27 semanas na tabela. O disco também foi número um na tabela Country Best-Seller (durante uma semana) e na tabela de rhythm & blues (durante cinco semanas).
