Even though the official date is today, the twenty members of one of the national fan clubs, "Burning Star", celebrated the 75 years of Elvis Presley's birth last friday, in a restaurant in Lisbon. "It was just a dinner among friends to remember 'The King', as we usually do," the president of the fan club, Ana Henriques, told CM.
If around here the celebrations are discreet, the tributes are multiplied around the World, be it in music, in books, theatre plays and the Internet.
The attention is turned towards Graceland, the Memphis home where the "King of Rock" lived with his daughter, Lisa Marie, and his ex-wife, Priscilla, where today a giant cake will be shared by all the present people.
To show Elvis is still alive, the ambiton goes even further: to turn 8 January the official date of the singer, something that is being negotiated with the Memphis authorities.
Even though he died in 1977, the singer is still making a lot of money: only last year the profits were more than 38 million euros. Profiting from this gold mine, still during this month, the new record, "Elvis 75" reaches the market, the new compilation with some of the most famous themes by the singer from "Love Me Tender". Cirque du Soleil is presenting the show "Viva Elvis", which is opening this month in Las Vegas.
Published this week in the USA, the book "Elvis: My Best Man" searches for confessions on the man: "Elvis gave his all in his performances and really enjoyed himself," stresses the author, George Klein, musician and Elvis Presley's friend when he was alive.
Finally, the official site (www.elvis.com) shows everything there is to see in the net: from the Facebook, Twitter or Youtube to videos remembering the famous funeral. The myth is more alive than ever.

The president of "Elvis 100%" Fan Club, Célia Carvalho, told CM that the 58 members intend to step in with initiatives throughout the year: "We want to have movie cycles and conversations, but we are still waiting for the support of some institutions."
It is titled "Elvis Presley and the Musical Cinema of Hollywood" and is authored by Jorge Carrega, devoted fan of the singer, who has a master degree on the theme. It was released in 2009 by HM Editora.
Besides releasing the compilation "Elvis 75", with some hits of the singer, Sony is re-releasing this year his more than 60 records. |
