Good Rockin' Tonight

download

(Brown)

Information:
Roy Brown wrote and first recorded Good Rockin’ Tonight (as Good Rocking Tonight) in 1947 on Deluxe Records (Deluxe 1093). He wrote the song while performing in Galveston, Texas. Originally, Brown didn’t sing it, because he did only ballads; the singer in his band sang it. One day his singer was ill and Brown was forced to sing Good Rockin’ Tonight himself, and the crowd reaction was good. With the lyrics written on a paper sack, Brown approached Wynonie Harris to record the song, but Harris wasn’t interested. Later, Cecil Gant had Brown sing Good Rockin’ Tonight over the telephone to the president of Deluxe Records at 3:00 am. Brown was soon signed to a recording contract. Ironically, Wynonie Harris covered Brown’s version in 1948 and had a more successful hit (King 4210). Pat Boone recorded Good Rockin’ Tonight in 1959 (Decca 15888) and reached #49 on the Hot 100 chart.

Elvis recorded Good Rockin’ Tonight on September 10, 1954, at Sun Records with backing by Scotty Moore and Bill Black. The single (Sun 210) was released on September 25, 1954. Good Rockin’ Tonight was a part of Elvis’s concert repertoire for the next few years. It was one of the songs he sang in the unreleased 1955 movie short The Pied Piper of Cleveland. The Bill Jack Wills Western Band covered Elvis’s recording with their release There’s Good Rockin’ Tonight (MGM 11966) in 1955.

In 1956 Jean Chapel had an answer record titled I Won’t Be Rockin’ Tonight (Sun 244). The 1957 movie Rock Baby Rock It featured Johnny Carroll singing Rockin’ Maybelle, which was based on Good Rockin’ Tonight with a little bit of Baby Let’s Play House thrown in (“Have you heard the news, my Maybelle’s rockin’ tonight”).

Lyrics:

Well, I heard the news there's good rockin' tonight
Well, I heard the news there's good rockin' tonight
I'm gonna hold my baby as tight as I can
Tonight she'll know I'm a mighty, mighty man
I heard the news there's good rockin' tonight

I say, meet me in a hurry behind the barn,
Don't you be afraid cause I'll do you no harm
I want you to bring along my rockin' shoes,
'Cause tonight I'm gonna rock away all my blues
I heard the news there's good rockin' tonight

Well, we're gonna rock, we're gonna rock.
Let's rock, come on and rock
We're gonna rock all our blues away
Have you heard the news? Everybody's rockin' tonight
Have you heard the news? Everybody's rockin' tonight

I'm gonna hold my baby as tight as I can,
Well, tonight she'll know I'm a mighty, mighty man
I heard the news there's good rockin' tonight

Well, we're gonna rock, rock, rock, come on and rock, rock, rock,
Well, rock, rock, rock, rock, let's rock, rock, rock, rock,
We're gonna rock all our blues away
