Mark James, Wayne Carson e Johnny Christopher escreveram a canção Always On My Mind para Elvis, que a gravou no dia 29 de março de 1972, nos estúdios da RCA, em Hollywood. Filmagens da sessão de gravação surgem no documentário de 1981, This Is Elvis. Muito embora Elvis tenha sido o primeiro a gravar a canção, foi a versão de Brenda Lee (Decca 32975) que foi lançada primeiro. No verão de 1972 ela alcançou a 45ª posição na tabela de música country. O lançamento do single de Elvis teve uma permanência de 13 semanas na tabela country, chegando à 16ª posição. Em 1982 Willie Nelson teve uma versão ainda mais bem sucedida de Always On My Mind (Columbia 02741), chegando à 5ª posição da tabela Hot 100 e encabeçando a tabela de música country. A Country Music Association nomeou Always On My Mind a Canção do Ano em 1982 e em 1983. Os Pet Shop Boys tiveram um êxito de top 20 com a canção no início de 1988 (EMI-Manhattan 50123).
