Blue Christmas foi escrita por Billy Hayes e Jay Johnson. Em 1949 houve três grandes êxitos da canção. Russ Morgan (Decca 24766) e Hugo Winterhalter (Columbia 38635) tiveram êxitos pop, chegando à 11ª e 21ª posições na tabela Best-Selling Singles da Billboard, respetivamente. Ernest Tubb tive um êxito de country Nº 2 com Blue Christmas (Decca 46186). Em 1950 Billy Eckstein fez uma gravação popular da canção (MGM 10796).

Elvis gravou Blue Christmas em 5 de setembro de 1957, no Radio Recorders. O take 3 foi o escolhido para lançar. Teriam de passar sete anos até Blue Christmas ser lançada em single, chegando ao topo da tabela especial Christmas Singles, da Billboard. Elvis cantou a canção no seu especial televisivo de 1968, Elvis. Blue Christmas foi substituída na parte repetida do espetáculo de 1969, por Tiger Man.
