Enquanto estava no Exército na Alemanha
Ocidental, Jesse Belvin escreveu Earth Angel. A canção foi originalmente
gravada pelos The Penguins em finais de 1954, com Belvin (usando o
pseudónimo Curtis Williams) como cantor principal. Earth Angel (Dootone 348)
entrou para a tabela de rhythm and blues no início de 1955 e foi 8º lugar na
tabela de singles Mais Vendidos. Foi o único disco do grupo que vendeu um
milhão de exemplares. Bem perto do lançamento dos The Penguins estava a
gravação dos The Crew-Cuts (Mercury 70529) que chegou à 8ª posição. Outras
versões que entraram para as tabelas incluem a versão de Gloria Mann (Sound
109) em 1955, a de Johnny Tillotson (Cadence 1377) em 1960 e a dos The
Vogues (Reprise 0820) em 1969.
Uma gravação privada de Elvis a cantar Earth Angel na
Alemanha Ocidental, algures entre 1958 e 1960 surgiu n o LP de 1984, A
Golden Celebration.
