Kris Kristofferson escreveu For the Good Times em 1970. Nesse mesmo ano, Ray Price teve um êxito country número um com a canção (Columbia 45178).

Elvis gravou For the Good Times em 27 de março de 1972, nos estúdios da RCA, em Hollywood. A gravação em estúdio permanece por lançar. A versão em disco foi gravada ao vivo em 10 de junho de 1972, em Madison Square Garden. Um ensaio de bastidores de For the Good Times em 16 de abril de 1972, em Jacksonville, na Flórida, apareceu no documentário Elvis On Tour.
