Roy Brown compôs e gravou pela primeira vez Good Rockin’ Tonight (com o título Good Rocking Tonight) em 1947 pela Deluxe Records (Deluxe 1093). Escreveu a canção enquanto estava a atuar em Galveston, no Texas. Originalmente, Brown não a cantou, porque só cantava baladas; era o cantor da sua banda que a cantava. Um dia o seu cantor ficou doente e Brown foi forçado a cantar Good Rockin’ Tonight ele mesmo, mas a reação do público foi boa. Com as letras escritas num saco de papel, Brown abordou Wynonie Harris para gravar a canção, mas Harris não estava interessado. Mais tarde, Cecil Gant fez Brown cantar Good Rockin’ Tonight ao telefone para o presidente da Deluxe Records às 3 horas da manhã. Brown assinou pouco tempo de depois um contrato de gravação com a Deluxe. Ironicamente, Wynonie Harris fez uma versão da gravação de Brown em 1948 e teve um êxito mais bem sucedido (King 4210). Pat Boone gravou Good Rockin’ Tonight em 1959 (Decca 15888) e alcançou o 49º lugar na tabela Hot 100. 

Elvis gravou Good Rockin’ Tonight em 10 de setembro de 1954, na Sun Records, com apoio de Scotty Moore e Bill Black. O single (Sun 210) foi lançado em 25 de setembro de 1954. Good Rockin’ Tonight fez parte do repertório dos concertos de Elvis nos anos seguintes. Foi uma das canções que ele cantou no filme de 1955 que nunca foi lançado The Pied Piper of Cleveland. The Bill Jack Wills Western Band fez uma versão da gravação de Elvis com o seu lançamento de There’s Good Rockin’ Tonight (MGM 11966) em 1955. 

Em 1956 Jean Chapel fez uma canção resposta intitulada I Won’t Be Rockin’ Tonight (Sun 244). O filme de 1957 Rock Baby Rock It apresentou Johnny Carroll a cantar Rockin’ Maybelle, que se baseava em Good Rockin’ Tonight com um bocadinho de Baby, Let’s Play House pelo meio (“Have you heard the news, my Maybelle’s rockin’ tonight”).
