Wayne P. Walker e Webb Pierce escreveram How Do You Think I Feel em 1954. Uma das primeiras gravações foi por Jimmie Rodgers Snow no final desse ano (RCA 47-5900). Em dezembro de 1954, Scotty Moore gravou uma versão instrumental de How Do You Think I Feel na Sun Records com Bill Black no baixo e Johnny Bernero na bateria. A gravação nunca chegou a ser lançada. 

Elvis gravou How Do You Think I Feel em 1 de setembro de 1956, no Radio Recorders. O take 7 foi o escolhido pela RCA para lançar para o mercado.
