 Lawdy Miss Clawdy foi escrita e gravada por Lloyd Price em 1952. A sua gravação (Specialty 428) foi número um na tabela de rhythm & blues da Billboard durante sete semanas em julho de agosto de 1952. O pianista no disco foi Fats Domino. Muito embora muitos artistas de rock tenham gravado Lawdy Miss Clawdy ao longo dos anos, as únicas outras versões que entraram nas tabelas foram as de Gary Stites (Carlton 525) em 1960 e a dos Buckinghams (U.S.A. 869) em 1967. A primeira gravação demo de Cliff Richard enviada para as gravadoras britânicas foi Lawdy Miss Clawdy / Breathless.

 

Elvis gravou Lawdy Miss Clawdy em 3 de fevereiro de 1956, nos estúdios da RCA em Nova Iorque. O seu single não entrou nas tabelas no outono de 1956. Em 27 de junho de 1968, Elvis cantou Lawdy Miss Clawdy tanto no espetáculo das 18h00 como no das 20h00 para o seu especial televisivo, Elvis. A atuação das 20h00 foi utilizada no especial e no álbum da banda sonora. Em 9 de abril de 1972, a atuação desta canção em Hampton Roads, Virginia, foi utilizada no documentário Elvis On Tour. Elvis, no papel de Dr. John Carpenter em Change of Habit, tocou uma parte de Lawdy Miss Clawdy ao piano.
