Money Honey foi escrita por Jess Stone e gravada pela primeira vez pelos Drifters (Atlantic 1006) em 1953. A sua gravação foi número um na tabela de rhythm & blues da Billboard durante umas surpreendentes 11 semanas (1).

 

Supostamente Buddy Holly ensinou Money Honey a Elvis quando os dois estavam a atuar juntos no Texas, em 1955. Elvis gravou a canção em 10 de janeiro de 1956, nos estúdios da RCA em Nova Iorque – a sua primeira sessão de gravação comercial para a RCA. Com base na sua presença no EP Heartbreak Hotel, Money Honey teve uma permanência de 5 semanas na tabela Top 100 da Billboard em 1956, chegando à 76ª posição. Um lançamento posterior em single da canção em 1956 não chegou a entrar nas tabelas.

 

(1) Desde Money Honey, apenas duas canções excederam 11 semanas na primeira posição da tabela de rhythm & blues: Honky Tonk, de Bill Doggett em 1956 e Searchin’/Young Blood dos Coasters, em 1957.
