My Way foi escrita por Gilles Thibault, Claude François e Jacques Reveaux em 1967, com o título francês, Comme d'Habitude. Num dia chuvoso em Las Vegas, em 1969, Paul Anka lembrou-se da melodia francesa que tinha ouvido enquanto tinha estado em França. Escreveu letra em inglês para a melodia, com Frank Sinatra em mente. Sinatra gravou My Way (Reprise 734) e teve um êxito que vendeu um milhão de exemplares em 1969. A canção chegou ao 27º lugar na tabela Hot 100. A gravação de Sinatra esteve nas tabelas britânicas durante 122 semanas - um recorde para esse país. No ano seguinte Brook Benton teve um êxito rhythm & blues com My Way (Cotillion 44072), chegando ao 25º lugar.

 

Elvis cantou My Way no seu especial televisivo de 1973, Elvis: Aloha From Hawaii, e no seu especial televisivo de 1977, Elvis in Concert. Uma versão desse último especial, gravada em 21 de junho de 1977 em Rapid City, em South Dakota, foi utilizada para lançar em single. My Way chegou ao 22º lugar durante as suas 12 semanas de permanência na tabela Hot 100. Alcançou o 6º lugar na tabela Easy-Listening. As vendas do single excederam o milhão de exemplares. O documentário de 1981, This is Elvis, apresentou My Way na sua banda sonora.
