Enquanto o Reverendo Thomas A. Dorsey viajava de Indiana para Cincinnati em 1939, o comboio em que seguia passou por um vale. Dorsey notou como os animais que estavam nas quintas pareciam em paz. Aquele cenário tranquilo inspirou-o a escrever Peace in the Valley. O título completo da canção é (There'll be) Peace in the Valley (for Me).

Em 1951 Red Foley gravou uma rendição que vendeu um milhão de exemplares de Peace in the Valley (Decca 46139) que foi um êxito country Nº 7. A Decca Records relançou o single em 1957. Os Stamps Quartet também gravaram a canção; a sua versão (Columbia 20836) saiu em 1952.

Elvis cantou Peace in the Valley na sua terceira apresentação no The Ed Sullivan Show (6 de Janeiro de 1957). Uma semana depois (13 de Janeiro), foi ao Radio Recorders, em Hollywood, para gravar a canção. O take 9 foi o escolhido pela RCA para lançar. Gordon Stoker dos Jordanaires toca órgão na faixa. Com base na sua apresentação no EP Peace in the Valley, Peace in the Valley alcançou o 39º lugar na tabela Top 100 da Billboard, permanecendo na tabela durante dez semanas.

Em 4 de Dezembro de 1956, na sessão Million-Dollar-Quartet, Peace in the Valley foi uma das melodias que o grupo cantou.
