Swing Down Sweet Chariot é baseada em Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, que foi arranjada em 1917 por Henry Thacker Burleigh. Burleigh, por sua vez, baseou o seu arranjo num velho espiritual negro que data, pelo menos, de 1872. Numerosos artistas têm gravado Swing Down Sweet Chariot ao longo dos anos, incluindo Fisk University Jubilee Quartet (Victor 16453) em 1910, Benny Goodman (Victor 25492), os Ink Spots (Decca 1230) e Bing Crosby (Decca 1809). Os Champs fizeram uma versão instrumental em 1958 intitulada Chariot Rock (Challenge 59018).

Elvis gravou Swing Down Sweet Chariot em 31 de Outubro de 1960, nos estúdios da RCA em Nashville. O apoio vocal foi disponibilizado pelos Jordanaires. Gravou outra versão em 1968 (em 14 ou 24 de Outubro) na United Recorders em Hollwyood, para o seu filme, The Trouble With Girls. O take 10 foi o escolhido para utilizar no filme. O lançamento em single em 1966 não entrou para as tabelas.
