Ray Charles escreveu e gravou What'd I Say em
1959. A sua gravação (Atlantic 2031) foi um êxito de rhythm & blues número
um. Na tabela Hot 100, chegou ao 6º lugar. What'd I Say foi o primeiro disco
de Charles a vender um milhão de exemplares e uma das primeiras gravações a
conter um piano eletrónico. Outras versões populares de What'd I Say
incluem as de Jerry Lee Lewis (Sun 356) em 1962, de Bobby Darin (Atco 6221)
em 1962 e de Rare Earth (Rare Earth 5043) em 1972.
Elvis cantou What'd I Say em concerto com
frequência. Gravou-a em julho de 1964 no Radio Recorders para o seu filme,
Viva Las Vegas. O seu lançamento em single, nesse ano, teve uma
permanência de seis semanas na tabela Hot 100 da Billboard, chegando
à 21ª posição. Elvis foi visto a ensaiar What'd I Say na MGM em julho de
1970 para o seu documentário Elvis - That's The Way It Is.
