William Robert (Billy The Kid) Emerson escreveu e gravou esta canção como When It Rains It Pours na Sun Records em finais de 1954. A sua gravação (Sun 214) foi lançada no mesmo dia - 8 de janeiro de 1955 - que o single de Elvis, Milkcow Blues Boogie / You're a Heartbreaker (Sun 215). Mais para o final de 1955, provavelmente em 11 de julho, Elvis tentou gravar When It Rains It Pours, mas nenhum take foi considerado aceitável para lançamento. O baterista Johnny Bernero juntou-se a Elvis, Scotty Moore e Bill Black para a sessão. Em 1983, os takes 2 (início falso) e 3 surgiram no LP Elvis - A Legendary Performer, Volume 4.

 

Em 24 de fevereiro de 1957, no Radio Recorders de Hollywood, Elvis tentou mais uma vez gravar a canção, desta vez como When it Rains it Really Pours. A versão no LP Elvis For Everyone é o take 8 dessa versão. Elvis cantou When it Rains it Really Pours durante um ensaio para o especial televisivo de 1968, Elvis, mas não foi utilizado para o programa.

 

O filme de 1958, Country Music Holiday, conteve uma excelente rendição - talvez a melhor - de When it Rains it Pours, por Faron Young.
