Dallas Frazier e Al Owens escreveram Where Did They Go Lord para Elvis, que gravou a canção em 22 de Setembro de 1970, nos estúdios da RCA, em Hollywood. O lançamento em single de Elvis teve uma permanência de sete semanas na tabela Hot 100 da Billboard, chegando à 33ª posição. Chegou ao 55º lugar na tabela country e ao 18º na tabela Easy-Listening. Algumas fontes afirmam que Where Did They Go Lord vendeu um milhão de exemplares.
