Elvis Presley was born 80 years ago. To mark this date, several objects of the King will be auctioned today. Among them, two private planes and the first recording, when Elvis was just 18 years old.

The president of the official Portuguese Elvis Presley fan club tell us how she “found” the King of Rock, a fascination that was born after she saw the movie Jailhouse Rock. An interview by reporter Guilhermina Sousa with sound by José Guerreiro.

At the anniversary of the King of Rock, TSF talked with the president of the fan club that gathers the Portuguese fans.

Célia Carvalho tells us that she found Elvis more than 30 years ago, when she wasn’t even 10 years old. The fascination started when she saw the movie Jailhouse Rock. To better understand and know the work of the singer, she immediately wanted to learn English.

Célia Carvalho has already been twice in Memphis, inside the mansion that belonged to Elvis Presley.

Translation of what was broadcasted on the radio:

Elvis Presley was born 80 years ago. On the King of Rock anniversary, TSF talked with the president of the fan club that gathers the Portuguese fans. To the reporter Guilhermina Sousa, Célia Carvalho tells that she found out Elvis more than 30 years ago, when she wasn’t even 10 years old (in the background, Jailhouse Rock starts playing). Célia Carvalho was just 9 years old when Jailhouse Rock, the movie, made her find the King. “My mother said, ‘Listen, baby, TV’s going to show a movie with an artist of my time, who I really like and I know you’ll enjoy it too.’ And so it was, from then onwards… who is this Elvis person? Back then I was 9 years old, he had been dead for 2 years. I was very upset for no one ever telling me about him, since I had been alive at the same time he was, without ever realizing it.” The collection started later on, around 17, 18 years old, but the passion was born back then. “For instance, when I was 9, I immediately wanted to learn English. Because: how am I going to understand what he is saying in his songs?” Célia has already been twice in Memphis, inside Elvis’s mansion, but it was inside the two room wooden shack where the King was born, in Mississippi, that she felt more impressed. “The first room was the bedroom and the next room was dedicated to the kitchen. The house has a definition name in the US, which is Shotgun House. You shot a gun in the back door and the shot went out through the front door, on the other side, crossing the whole house.” The wooden shack could be put inside Graceland’s living room and it is a symbol of a town that welcomes very well all Elvis Presley’s fans. “They have manufactured 22 keys of the city because there were 22 countries represented there and they gave each person representing each country one of those gold keys, which I have brought.” Célia Carvalho does not own any Elvis personal objects. For her, the true collection must teach something. “Books, bood books, and there are quite a few of those. And then, of course, the music and the filmography. Anything that has got to do with things where we can see him and listen to him. It is not necessarily something that belonged to him. Those things would only be valuable to me if he had given them to me directly.” Célia tells that her mother used to fall asleep listening to the sound of Elvis singing while she was pregnant, therefore she claims that she was already listening to the King even before she was born (Are You Lonesome Tonight plays in the background).
