One Night of Sin

download

(Bartholomew / King)

Information:
Smiley Lewis first recorded this Dave Bartholomew-Pearl King tune in 1956 as One Night of Sin (Imperial 5380). His recording did not chart.

On January 24, 1957, Elvis recorded One Night of Sin at Radio Recorders. The risqué version ("One night of sin is what I'm praying for") was not released until 1983, when it appeared on the LP Elvis - A Legendary Performer, Volume 4. The cleaned-up version that was first released on singles and LPs ("One night with you is what I'm now praying for") was recorded a month later on February 23, 1957, also at Radio Recorders. Take #10 is the master recording. Elvis's single release of One Night reached #4 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart during its 17-week stay on the chart, #24 on the country chart, and #10 on the rhythm & blues chart. In England the song went to number one and stayed at the top for three weeks. Worldwide sales have easily exceeded one million copies. In 1976 Roy Head (ABC / Dot 17650) covered Elvis's version. In 1963 Fats Domino (Imperial 5980) had covered Smiley Lewis's original version.

Elvis sang One Night in concert countless times. A recording of his performance at the Bloch Arena for the USS Arizona Memorial has appeared on several bootlegs. In 1980 RCA finally released the performance on the Elvis Aron Presley LP. Elvis came close to the original risqué lyrics in his 1968 TV Special, Elvis.

Lyrics:

One night of sin, yeah, is what I'm now praying for
The things I did and I saw would make the earth stand still
Don't call my name it makes me feel so ashamed
I lost my sweet helping hand, I got myself to blame
Always lived a very quiet life, I ain't never did no wrong
Now I know that very quiet life has cost me nothing but harm

One night of sin, yeah, is what I'm now praying for
The things I did and I saw would make the earth stand still
Always lived a very quiet life, I ain't never did no wrong
Now I know that very quiet life has cost me nothing but harm

One night of sin is what I'm now praying for
The things I did and I saw would make the earth stand still
