Rags to Riches

download

(Adler / Ross)

Information:

Tony Bennett recorded Rags to Riches, which was written by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross, in 1953. His version (Columbia 40048) reached number one on Billboard's Best-Selling Singles chart and sold over a million copies. Billy Ward and the Domingoes recorded Rags to Riches in 1954 for the King label (King 1280). The record reached #3 on the rhythm & blues chart. A pop version by Sunny and the Sunglows (Tear Drop 3022) charted in 1963 (#45).

Elvis recorded Rags to Riches on September 22, 1970, at RCA's Hollywood studios. He later had to dub in the word kiss, as it was recorded poorly on the master. The single release peaked at #45 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart, remaining on the chart for five weeks. It's been rumoured that Elvis recorded Rags to Riches at Sun Records in 1954 or 1955, but that has remained unsubstantiated.

Lyrics:

I know I'd go from rags to riches
If you would only say you cared
And though my pockets may be empty
I'd be a millionaire

My clothes may still be torn and tattered
But in my heart I'd be a king
Your love is all that ever mattered
It's everything

So open your arms and you'll open the door
To all the treasures that I'm living for
Hold me and kiss me

And tell me you're mine evermore

Must I forever stay a beggar
Whose golden dreams will not come true
Or will I go from rags to riches
My fate is up to you
