(Sedaka / Cody)

Neil Sedaka and Phil Cody wrote Solitaire in 1972 for Sedaka's LP Solitaire (Kirschner KES-117). The album was recorded in England. Andy Williams had the first single release of Solitaire that charted. His 1973 recording (Columbia 45936) peaked at #23 on Billboard's Easy-Listening chart. Two years later, the Carpenters took Solitaire (A&M 1721) to #17 on the Hot 100 chart.

Elvis recorded Solitaire at Graceland on the night of February 3-4, 1976. His single release had a 12-week stay on the country chart, reaching a high of #10.

There was a man, a lonely man

Who lost his love, through his indifference
A heart that cared that went unshared
Until it died within his silence

1. And solitaire’s the only game in town
Every road that takes him, takes him down
While life goes on around him everywhere
He's playing solitaire

2. And keeping to himself begins to deal
And still the king of hearts is well concealed
Another losing game comes to an end
And deals them out again

A little hope goes up in smoke
Just how it goes, goes without saying
There was a man, a lonely man
Who would command the hand he's playing

1. 2. 1. (repeat)
