You Don't Have to Say You Love Me

download

(Wickham / Napier-Bell / Donaggio / Pallavicini)

Information:

Using the title Io Che Non Vivo (Senza Te), V. Pallavicini and P. Donaggio wrote You Don't Have to Say You Love Me for the San Remo (Italy) song contest in 1965. English lyrics were later written by Vicki Wickham and Simon Napier-Bell. In 1966 Dusty Springfield reached #4 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart and sold a million copies with her recording of the song (Phillips 40371). Two years later, the Four Sonics had a mildly successful cover version (Sport 110) that reached #89 on the chart.

Elvis recorded You Don't Have to Say You Love Me on June 6, 1970, at RCA's Nashville studios. The brief piano introduction was eliminated from RCA's single release. Elvis can be seen rehearsing the song at MGM in preparation for his upcoming Las Vegas engagement in the 1970 documentary, Elvis - That's The Way It Is. Rehearsals at the International Hotel were also seen.

You Don't Have to Say You Love Me spent 10 weeks on Billboard's Hot 100 chart, peaking at #11. It replaced the Carpenters' We've Only Just Begun at number one on the Easy-Listening chart and was itself replaced after only a week at the top by Perro Como's It's Impossible. You Don't Have to Say You Love Me was on the Easy-Listening chart for 11 weeks. A peak position of #56 was achieved on the country chart. Sales of a million copies were easily attained.

Lyrics:

When I said I needed you

You said you would always stay
It wasn't me who changed, but you
And know you've gone away

Don't you know that now you're gone
And I'm left here on my own
Now I have to follow you
And beg you to come home

You don't have to say you love me, just be close at hand
You don't have to stay forever, I will understand
Believe me, believe me, I can't help but love you
But believe me, I'll never tie you down

Left alone with just a memory
Life seems dead and so unreal
All that's left is loneliness
There's nothing left to feel

You don't have to say you love me, just be close at hand
You don't have to stay forever, I will understand
Believe me, oh believe me

You don't have to say you love me, just be close at hand
You don't have to stay forever, I will understand
Believe me, believe me, believe me
