O Reverendo W. B. Stone escreveu Farther Along em 1937. Desde essa altura que a canção serviu de canção padrão para vários grupos de gospel. Nos finais dos anos 40 os Stamps Quartet tiveram uma gravação popular de Farther Along pela Columbia Records (Columbia 20337). Um aspeto de interesse a sublinhar é que os Stamps tiveram um lançamento posterior de Farther Along pela Okeh Records (Okeh 04236) que continha as seguintes palavras “Acompanhamento ao piano – Presley” na etiqueta. O lado B era A Beautiful Prayer.

Elvis gravou Farther Along durante a sessão para How Great Thou Art em 27 de maio de 1966, nos estúdios da RCA, em Nashville. Durante a sessão da Million-Dollar-Quartet em 4 de dezembro de 1956, Elvis cantou Farther Along com harmonia vocal disponibilizada por Carl Perkins e Jerry Lee Lewis.
