I Believe foi escrita por Ervin Drake, Irvin Graham, Jimmy Shirl e Al Stillman e apresentada por Jane Froman na sua série televisiva Jane Froman's U.S.A. Canteen, em finais de 1952. A sua gravação da canção (Capitol 2332) no início de 1953 alcançou a 11ª posição na tabela Best-Selling Singles da Billboard. I Believe foi a primeira canção na história televisiva a transformar-se num êxito devido a um resultado directo de exposição no ar. Também em 1953, James Elmore teve um êxito Nº 9 de rhythm and blues com a canção pela Meteor Records (Meteor 5000). Na realidade, a sua gravação foi lançada poucos dias antes da de Froman. No entanto, o grande êxito de 1953, foi a versão de Frankie Laine. A sua versão de I Believe (Columbia 39938) alcançou o 2º lugar e vendeu mais de um milhão de exemplares. Em Inglaterra, estabeleceu um recorde que ainda se mantém - foi número um durante 18 semanas (não consecutivas). Os Bachelors tiveram um êxito Nº 7 na tabela Easy-Listening e venderam um milhão de exemplares em 1964 com a sua versão (London 9672).

Elvis gravou I Believe em 12 de Janeiro de 1957, no Radio Records. A RCA escolheu o take 9 para lançamento.
