Thomas Estendorf escreveu I’ll Take You Home Again Kathleen em 1876. Inspirou-se para escrever a canção enquanto a sua esposa (cujo nome era Jennie) estava for a de visita a alguns familiares. Estendorf baseou a sua melodia em Barney, Take Me Home Again, de Arthur W. French e George W. Brown. I’ll Take You Home Again Kathleen foi a canção tema para a série radiofónica Orphans of Divorce, e era uma particular favorita de Thomas Alva Edison. De facto, a canção foi tocada no seu funeral em 1931. I’ll Take You Home Again Kathleen tem sido gravada por vários artistas ao longo dos anos, incluindo Will Oakland (Edison Ambersol 1102) em 1912, Walter Van Brunt (Edison 80160) em 1916 e Slim Whitman (Imperal 8310), cuja versão chegou ao 93º lugar da tabela Hot 100 da Billboard, em 1957.

 

Elvis gravou I’ll Take You Home Again Kathleen em 19 de maio de 1971, nos estúdios da RCA em Nashville.
