King of the Whole Wide World foi escrita por Ruth Batchelor e Bob Roberts para o filme de Elvis de 1962, Kid Galahad, onde foi cantada durante o genérico de abertura. Elvis gravou a música pela primeira vez em 26 de outubro de 1961, no Radio Recorders. O take principal aceitável (o 31) nunca foi lançado oficialmente pela RCA, muito embora já tenha sido lançado em discos pirata. No dia seguinte, 27 de outubro, Elvis voltou a tentar gravar King of the Whole Wide World, desta vez com um arranjo diferente. A RCA lançou o take 4 dessa sessão. O solo final de saxofone de Boots Randolph nesse take foi eliminado antes do disco ser lançado. Muito embora a RCA nunca tenha lançado um single de King of the Whole Wide World para o grande público, a canção alcançou o 30º lugar na tabela Hot 100 da Billboard (durante uma permanência de sete semanas) em 1962, com base no sucesso do EP, Kid Galahad.
