Jerry Leiber e Mike Stoller escreveram esta canção título para o filme de Elvis de 1958, King Creole. Várias tentativas foram feitas para gravar King Creole. A primeira sessão foi em 15 de janeiro de 1958, no Radio Recorders. Nenhum take foi considerado razoável para lançamento, muito embora a RCA tenha assinalado os takes 3 e 18. Oito dias depois, em 23 de janeiro, Elvis finalmente gravou a versão (take 13) que seria utilizada em disco, mas era muito diferente dos takes da sessão anterior. Os takes alternativos que apareceram em discos piratas parecem ser todos da sessão de 15 de janeiro.
