Informação:

No início dos anos 50 Chuck Berry cantou a canção Ida Red, de Bob Wills, no seu número de clube noturno, imitando os cantores de música country famosos da atualidade. Depois de assinar contrato com a Chess Records, Ida Red foi a primeira gravação de Berry. Supostamente gravou 36 takes antes de uma versão ser considerada suficientemente boa para lançar. O título foi alterado para Maybellene depois de Berry se lembrar de uma vaca chamada Maybellene numa rima de cantiga infantil. Maybellene (Chess 1604) tornou-se num número 1 de rhythm & blues em 1955. Também se saiu bem na tabela Top 100, chegando ao 5º lugar. As vendas ultrapassaram o milhão de exemplares. A primeira versão de Maybellene foi por Marty Robbins, nos finais de 1955 (Columbia 21446). Johnny Rivers reanimou a canção em 1964 (Imperial 66056), chegando ao 12 lugar da tabela Hot 100.

 

Elvis cantou Maybellene ao vivo e com bastante frequência no programa Louisiana Hayride, em 1955 e 1956.
