Milkcow Blues Boogie foi escrita e gravada por James (Kokomo) Arnold em 1935 sob o título Milk Cow Blues. A canção tem sido gravada por vários artistas ao longo dos anos, incluindo Bob Crosby (Decca 1962) em 1938, Johnny Lee Wills (Decca 5985) em 1941, Moon Mullican com o título New Milk Cow Blues (King 607) em 1946, Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys com o título Brain Cloudy Blues (Columbia 20113) em 1946 e por Ricky Nelson (Imperial 5707) em 1961. A gravação de Nelson alcançou o 79º lugar na tabela Hot 100.

 

Elvis gravou Milkcow Blues Boogie nos estúdios da Sun em 10 de Dezembro de 1954. O seu único acompanhamento musical foi Scotty Moore na guitarra, Bill Black no contrabaixo e a sua própria guitarra.
