Neil Sedaka e Phil Cody escreveram Solitaire em 1972 para o LP de Sedaka, Solitaire (Kirschner KES-117). O álbum foi gravado na Inglaterra. Andy Williams teve o primeiro lançamento em single de Solitaire a entrar nas tabelas. A sua gravação de 1973 (Columbia 45936) chegou ao 23º lugar na tabela Easy-Listening da Billboard. Dois anos mais tarde, os Carpenters levaram Solitaire (A&M 1721) ao 17º lugar na tabela Hot 100.

Elvis gravou Solitaire em Graceland, na noite de 3 para 4 de Fevereiro de 1976. O seu lançamento em single teve uma permanência de 12 semanas na tabela country, chegando ao 10º lugar.
