Keeper of the Key
download
(Stewart
/ Howard / Devine / Guynes)
Information:
At the time of the Million-Dollar-Quartet session on December
4, 1956, country singer Wynn Stewart had just released Keeper of the Key
(Capitol 3515), which his wife, Beverly, had written with Harlan Howard,
Kenny Devine and Lance Guynes. Although popular in the South, Keeper of the
Key did not chart nationally. Porter Wagoner later had a version that also
did not chart, as did Jimmy Wakely (Shasta 110). At the
Million-Dollar-Quartet session, Carl Perkins sang lead, with Elvis and Jerry
Lee Lewis singing harmony.
Lyrics:
You have gone
and yet I'm still your prisoner
You alone can change my misery
Each tear that falls could break the chains that bind me
For you are the keeper of the key
Love locked inside like mine burns constantly
Oh, darling, please come back to me
We'll lock our hearts together for a lifetime
And God will be the keeper of the key
