(Rice / Wayne)

Information:

The Girl Next Door Went A-Walking was written by Bill Rice and Thomas Wayne (real name: Thomas Wayne Perkins) and originally recorded by Wayne, an L.C. Humes High School graduate, in 1959 (Fernwood 122). On the label of Wayne's record, the title was given as Girl Next Door. Elvis recorded the song on April 4, 1960, at RCA's Nashville studios. The title appeared as The Girl Next Door on the first pressings of the Elvis is Back LP. Later pressings had the title as The Girl Next Door Went A-Walking.

Lyrics:

1. The girl next door went a-walking
She found the boy she liked
She wanted to get married, settle down in life

2. The girl next door went a-walking
She knew it wasn't right
She came home half past ten late every night

1. (repeat)

3. She didn't know love was so grand
She never took love second hand
But to my surprise she thought that love was paradise

1. 2. 1. 3. 1. (repeat)

Now the two are married
Settled down for life
She walks by hand in hand late every night

1. (repeat)

Settle down in life, settle down in life
Settle down in life
