Chuck Berry escreveu e gravou Promised Land (Chess 1916) em 1965. A sua gravação alcançou o 41º lugar na tabela Hot 100. Freddie Weller teve um êxito country Nº 3 no início de 1971 com Promised Land (Columbia 45276) e James Taylor incluiu a canção no seu popular LP de 1974, Walking Man (Warner Bros. BS 2794).

Elvis gravou Promised Land nos estúdios Stax, em Memphis, em 15 de Dezembro de 1973. Posteriormente o som de percursão seria acrescentado por David Briggs. O lançamento de Elvis em single teve uma permanência de 13 semanas na tabela Hot 100, chegando ao 14º lugar, e uma permanência de 8 semanas na tabela Easy-Listening, onde chegou ao 11º lugar. Promised Land era uma presença constante no repertório ao vivo de Elvis.
