I Was the One

download

(Schroeder/ DeMetrius/ Blair/ Peppers)

Information:
I Was the One was written by Aaron Schoreder, Claude DeMetrius, Hal Blair, and Bill Pepper, and first recorded by Elvis on January 11, 1956, at RCA’s Nashville studios. Gorden Stoker, Ben Speer, and Brock Speer provided vocal support. Backed with Heatbreak Hotel, I Was the One was the first RCA release of new material for Elvis. The single had a 16-week stay on Billboard’s Top 100 chart, peaking at # 23, and reached # 11 on the Country Disc Jockey chart. Sales of one million copies were achieved. Elvis sang I Was the One on his fourth appearance on Stage Show (February 18, 1956) and during his last appearance on Louisiana Hayride (December 16, 1956).

Lyrics:

I was the one who taught her to kiss

The way that she kisses you now
And you know the way that she touches your cheek
I taught her how

I was the one who taught her to cry
When she wants you under her spell
The sight of her tears drives you out of your mind
I taught her so well

1. And then one day
I had my love as perfect as could be
She lived, she loved, she laughed, she cried,
And it was all for me

2. I'll never know who taught her to lie
Now that it's over and done
Who learned the lesson when she broke my heart?
I was the one

1. 2. (repeat)
