What'd I Say

download

(Charles)

Information:

Ray Charles wrote and recorded What'd I Say in 1959. His recording (Atlantic 2031) was a number one rhythm & blues hit. On the Hot 100 chart, it peaked at #6. What'd I Say was Charles's first million-seller and one of the first recordings to feature an electric piano. Other popular versions of What'd I Say include those by Jerry Lee Lewis (Sun 356) in 1962, Bobby Darin (Atco 6221) in 1962, and Rare Earth (Rare Earth 5043) in 1972.

Elvis sang What'd I Say in concert frequently. He recorded it in July 1964 at Radio Recorders for his film Viva Las Vegas. His single release that year had a six-week stay on Billboard's Hot 100 chart, peaking at #21. Elvis was seen rehearsing What'd I Say at MGM in July 1970 in his documentary Elvis - That's The Way It Is.

Lyrics:

Hey mama, don't you treat me wrong

Come and love your daddy all night long
All right, hey, hey, all right now

See the girl with the diamond ring
She knows how to shake her thing
All right, hey, hey, mmm, all right now

Ahhh, ohh, ahhh, ohh, ahhh, ohh, ohh

Make me feel so good, make me feel so good right now
Make me feel so good, make me feel so good right now
Make me feel so good, make me feel so good

Mmm, see the girl with the red dress on
She can do the dog all night long
All right, hum, what'd I say, tell me what'd I say

Tell me, what'd I say, tell me what'd I say right now
Tell me, what'd I say, tell me what'd I say right now
Tell me, what'd I say, tell me what'd I say

Ahhh, ohh, ahhh, ohh, ahhh, ohh
It's all right, it's all right right now
Baby, it's all right, baby, it's all right right now
Baby, it's all right, oh yeah!

Baby, shake that thing, baby, shake that thing right now
Baby, shake that thing, baby, shake that thing right now
Baby, shake that thing, well I feel all right
