I Got a Woman

download

(Charles)

Information:
I Got a Woman was written and first recorded (using the title I've Got a Woman) by Ray Charles in 1954 at radio station WGST, on the grounds of Georgia Tech University in Atlanta. Charles based the tune on the gospel song My Jesus Is All the World I Need. His recording (Atlantic 1050) rose to #2 on Billboard's rhythm and blues chart in early 1955. Other popular recordings of I Got a Woman include those by Jimmy McGriff (Sue 770), a 1962 instrumental; Ricky Nelson (Decca 31475) in 1963; Freddie Scott (Colpix 709) in 1963; and Bob Luman (Epic 10755) in 1971. Both Charles and McGriff used the title I've Got a Woman.

Elvis sang I Got a Woman on the Louisiana Hayride and on tour in 1955. Some speculate that he recorded the song while at Sun Records, but no proof exists.

At 02:00 P.M. on January 10, 1956, Elvis recorded I Got a Woman at RCA's Nashville studios. It was his first recording for RCA. Musicians on the session were Elvis, Scotty Moore, Bill Black, D.J. Fontana, and Floyd Cramer. Backing vocals were by Gordon Stoker, Ben Speer, and Brock Speer. I Got a Woman appeared on Elvis's first LP, Elvis Presley, and later in 1956 was released as a single. It did not chart. In England, I Got a Woman was released on albums with the title I Got a Sweetie.

Elvis sang I Got a Woman on his first appearance on Stage Show (January 28, 1956). A performance of the song at Hampton Roads, Virginia, on April 9, 1972, was used in the documentary Elvis On Tour. I Got a Woman was a staple of Elvis's repertoire in the 1970s. He often sang it in a medley with Amen.

Lyrics:

1. Well, I've got a woman
way cross town
She's good to me oh, yeah
Say I've got a woman way cross town
She's good to me oh, yeah

She's good in the morning, loving me
Yeah, she's a kind of friend in need

I got a woman way cross town

She's good to me, oh yeah

She says she loves me early in the morning just for me, oh yeah

She says she loves me early in the morning just for me, oh yeah
She's good to lovin' just for me, yeah

You know she loves me so tenderly

I got a woman way cross town

She's good to me, oh yeah

She's there to love me both day and night
Never groans or fusses, just treats me right
Never running in the streets leaving me alone
She knows a woman's place is right there now in her home

1. (repeat)

Oh she's my baby, don't you understand I'm her lover man
I got a woman way over town, she's good to me, oh yeah
A don't ya know she's alright,she's alright, alright

I got a woman way over town good to me

Yeah
